Chapter 19
Daniel led them to the huge garage where there was a selection of sport cars and SUV’s. The garage was a high-ceilinged, vast space were there was room for at least twenty cars to park and Jamie reckoned from a quick glance that at least the fifteen spots were occupied. As they started walking across the garage, he noticed a red Ferrari 458, a white Lamborghini Gallardo, a silver Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a dark-blue BMW M5 and the list went on with more expensive sport cars. There were also some SUV 4x4s cars: a dark-green Range Rover, a black BMW X5, and a black Jeep Cherokee. At the very end of the garage there were two limousines, one white and the black with which they had arrived there earlier that night.
Daniel pressed a button in the control box, which was attached on his key-rings and unlocked the black limo. Everyone got in the car. This time, there was no chauffeur, one of the two black suited men sat behind the wheel to drive instead and the other one took the seat beside him. The rest of them went into the back seats. With Jamie, Emma and Jessie at one side and Daniel at the opposite side, facing them and holding his gun at the ready. The car started and slowly exited Newell’s estate.
Jamie was terrified. They were all about to be murdered in cold blood and there was nothing to do about it, and it was entirely his fault. Well, maybe not entirely. Jamie thought. Jessie had her hands dirty as well, because if it was not for her, Jamie and Emma might still have been safe and sound at their hotel. David was right all along, Jamie thought and raised his head to look out of the window. The sky was crystal-clear and was full of tiny stars.
They passed around fifteen minutes on the road, without anyone speaking. After a while, Daniel, who all this time, had been observing Jamie’s reactions, laughed faintly.
‘What’s so funny?’ Jamie asked him irritated.
‘It’s just that I was told that you never give up and you’re very difficult to be disheartened! A strong character, not easy to break,’ began Daniel. ‘But it seems, that the realisation of the imminent death can bend anyone to the ground,’ he concluded.
Jamie did not have the strength to answer. In fact, he was not even sure how to respond to a statement like that.
Daniel looked outside of the window and smiled. ‘Cheer up, guys. It’s not over yet,’ he said to the trio and he punched his fist softly on the glass that separated the front seats from the back ones. The glass lowered down slowly and the driver looked at him through the mirror. ‘I think we’re gonna have a little stop here, guys,’ he said and the car slowed down and eventually stopped.
The six of them went outside. They had parked the car at the side of the road on a completely deserted area. There were no houses to be seen within reach, no cars passing and not even street-lights.
